The South African photographer Zanele Muholi is the subject of a show opening at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (8 July-15 October). Her work, which aims in part to represent her country’s LGBTQ and intersex community, is also a meditation on race, according to the museum. “Muholi creates historical, cultural and personally inspired versions of ‘blackness’” that “speak to current debates about stigmatisation and stereotyping,” says Hripsimé Visser, the curator of the show. One series will be presented in the Netherlands for the first time: Muholi’s project Somnyama Ngonyama (Hail to the Black Lioness) (2015-ongoing), where she photographs herself with different hairstyles. Around 80 pictures spanning over a decade are due to be included.
